Homework Policy
The Parents Guide to homework :
When parents take an interest in their child's school work they teach an important lesson - that learning is worth effort.
Children who do more homework do better in school.
Teachers set homework so children can:
- Practice what they have learnt in school
- Prepare for the next days lessons
- Develop good study habits
- Become independent learners
Show you think education and homework are important.
- Set a regular time for homework
- Provide a place to study that is fairly quiet and well lit. A desk is good but the kitchen table can work just as well.
- Turn off the TV and restrict social telephone calls during homework time. Encourage all the family to find quiet activities.
- Assemble all the paper, pens and equipment your child needs and keep them tidy and accessible.
- Set an example by reading and writing your self.
- Take your child to the library for information needed for homework
Check your child's work.
- Ask what the teacher expects and how the teacher wants you to be involved. Some teachers only want you to make sure the work is done. Others want you to go over the homework and help your child.
- Check to see assignments are started and finished on time.
- Work out a programme for a busy child so there is time for sports, clubs and homework.
Give Guidance.
- Find out how your child learns best and build on that.
- Encourage good study habits by discussing how much time an assignment is likely to take, the preparation needed, resources to find.
- Ask questions about homework to see if your child understands what is required.
- Give praise. Everyone likes to be told when they have done a good job. Keep criticisms to a minimum and then only offer constructive suggestions.
Discuss problems with the school.
- Contact the teacher if your child is having constant difficulties with homework. Teachers will appreciate hearing from you if there's a problem as they want to set homework children will enjoy and can finish successfully.
- Children and parents should not have to struggle with homework. Homework should be reinforcement work of what has been taught during the day and not be new to the child.
